Why You're Tired All the Time After 40 (And Why More Cardio Isn't Fixing It)

Why am I so tired all the time after 40?

Two things happen simultaneously after about age 30:

  1. You lose muscle. Roughly 3–5% per decade, and it accelerates with age. Muscle isn't just for lifting things; it's metabolically active tissue that drives your whole energy system.

In a study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology, 41 middle-aged adults (average age 50, range 40–64) completed a 10-week resistance training program. Afterward, their muscle mitochondria required far less stimulus to fire up, and maximum respiratory capacity — essentially the ceiling on how much energy the muscle can produce — rose from 76.5 to 105.7 units. That's roughly a 38% increase in energy-producing capacity, in ten weeks, in people in their 40s, 50s, and early 60s.

A separate study followed 16 previously untrained older adults (average age 59) through 10 weeks of full-body resistance training, just twice a week. Protein levels of the mitochondrial electron transport chain complexes — the actual machinery of energy production — increased by 39% to 180%.

Read that again: twice a week, ten weeks, untrained, average age 59.

Strength training doesn't just make you stronger. It rebuilds the equipment your body uses to make energy in the first place. That's why people who start lifting in their 50s so often describe the change as "I feel like myself again" rather than "my arms got bigger."

What does a week actually look like?

You don't need to live in the gym. The studies that produced those results used two to three sessions a week.

  • 2–3 strength sessions, built on compound movements: a squat or sit-to-stand, a hinge, an upper-body push, an upper-body pull, and a carry.

  • 2–3 sets of 8–12 reps, adding a little weight or one more rep as it gets easier.
